Strictly... Todd Terry
Released Monday 12th November 2007
Acid house king Todd Terry returns to the UK dance scene with a bang sure to be heard the world over. Primed and ready to drop is his new mix album Strictly... Todd Terry, an amalgamation of classic Strictly Rhythm beats and contemporary tracks which is a must for any self respecting music lover's collection. The album, as well as a forthcoming single release 'Get Down' which has kicked up a storm in Ibiza this summer, means that everyone interested in dance music and its culture is welcoming with open arms the return of one of the most prolific artists in House.
'Todd the God', they named him. In the late 80s, Todd Terry WAS New York house music. Arguably he invented it, certainly he defined it. In truth, the moniker was probably coined by a deadline-surfing journalist searching for a quick headline. However, it stuck, because Todd Terry bestrode the scene like a colossus. Still stuck firm today, he tries to live up to the label as modestly as he can: "The 'Todd The God' label it's a good thing for me, it keeps me going, it keeps me living up to it, I always have to come out with a new great record and I always have to play a great DJ set". Todd Terry.
His profile was certainly upped again with his work on three of the most respected crossover remixes of the House era - 'I'll House You' by the Jungle Brothers, 'Missing' by Everything but the Girl and 'Can You Party' by Royal House, which was in many ways 'the' defining record of the summer of 1988, with it's trademark wailing sirens and dance floor call to arms of "Can you feel it!"
So why is he choosing to make his comeback on this label? Todd has always been closely linked to Strictly Rhythm and played a key role in the label's evolution. Through 1990/91 - still very early days for Strictly - he recorded a number of significant releases and became one of the label's primary artists. He also wasted no time in recommending the label to Brooklyn buddy Kenny Gonzalez, who in turn brought in his new production partner Louie Vega, both of whom became corner stones of the label's output. In essence, he was the guy who originally put together what is one of the best known and well respected DJ duos in the business - Masters at Work.
He also toured extensively in playing the Strictly parties, not just in the States but also Europe, often alongside a hot up'n'comer of the time, Roger Sanchez. Once again this helped showcase the innovative side of what Strictly Rhythm was trying to create.
The mid-90's saw Terry's rep reach new levels. His simple but brilliantly effective revamp of Everything But The Girl's haunting 'Missing' became a massive international hit, single-handedly revived the duo's then flagging career, and cementing Todd's status as a superstar remixer, leading him to work with superstar's Bjork, Garbage, George Michael, Jamiroquai and the Cardigans. Later he also worked with vocalists such as Martha Wash and Jocelyn Brown and scored crossover hits with 'Keep On Jumpin' and 'Something's Goin' On'; some of dance music's seminal musical moments.
Todd has remained an international producer and DJ icon throughout the naughties, producing records and playing to star-struck crowds around the world. He now returns to the shelves with his first compilation on the newly reborn label. A double mix album which features many of Strictly Rhythm classics such as 'Morels Groove 4', Colonel Abrhams Ð 'Victims of Loving' and CLS Ð 'Can You Feel It' (not to be confused with Royal House). This is not just a retrospective album, far from it. Look out for Todd's new projects 'Play On' and 'Get Down' which see him working with the infamous 'My My My' vocalist Tara McDonald. Both are sure to be big chart successes worldwide. Other highlights include the retro sounding Marlon D - 'Jesus Creates Sound', and the tracky dance floor number Grand high Priest - 'My Guitar'.
This CD is also available unmixed in a three CD Digi Pack for all those DJ that would like to emulate the masters style and own some of his infinite record collection.
