Potty Mouth Music’s The Bulgarian Reinvents “Jack It Like a Zombie” with 10-Track Remix EP PMM037 includes winning tracks from label’s first global remix competition

CHICAGO— When DJ/producer The Bulgarian (aka Dimitre Vassilev) released “Jack It Like a Zombie” in 2006, Potty Mouth Music was still gaining ground as one of the premiere labels in dance music. Released as a single track on PMM003, the cut featured quirky vocals styled by Spoek and sharp sense of dance floor credibility. Now nearly four years later, “Jack It Like a Zombie” gets a diverse rework from some of music’s top-tier producers and emerging talents. The result is collaborative sampling of electro, house and dubstep that keeps PMM fans guessing into each beat.

“This was the flagship track of the PMM003 EP—it also has that wonderful vocal from Spoek which makes it even more remix friendly,” Vassilev says of his self-styled “Zombie EP.” “At the time of its release, the label was still in its infancy and (Label Owner) James Amato and I think it deserves another shot.”

So did the 482 producers who officially registered for the remix contest, which wrapped up in January 2010. In the end, 60 producers were chosen to participate and 40 submitted their mixes before the deadline. PMM selected two winners based on a set of four criteria: Use of remix parts, production quality, overall groove and label compatibility.

“I had an extremely difficult time picking just one winner,” says Amato, who narrowed his final four selections to two genres: electro house and dubstep remixes. Final remix winners include the dubstep shuffle of Chicago’s HULK and the peak-hour synergy of L.A.’s Cold Blank.

Both HULK and Cold Blank join an established roster of producers and their evolving sounds. Consider the slicing snyths laid down by UK’s Nom De Strip juxtaposed with Angel Alanis’ signature techno finesse. Aussie Adam Bozzetto’s electro house rework bumps against deep, glitchy goodness from Dufflebag Recordings Head Wally Callerio. And Jason Hodges’ bumpy, straight-house spin on “Zombie” has prompted play from global dance elite, including Om’s Mark Farina.

In addition to the new cuts, “Zombie Remixed,” includes the original PMM003 remix by Chicago’s Santiago & Bushido, along with a new version retooled by The Bulgarian—who has certainly come a long way since his 2006 PMM debut. In addition to launching his self-helmed Feta Recordings, Vassilev is evolving with a scene that he is equally enthusiastic about. He says “Jack It Like a Zombie” and PMM’s remix competition embodies that same progressive spirit.

“I think last year we saw the scene transition,” he says. “I’m as enthusiastic now about what people are making as I was back in 2006 when the first Dubsided records started surfacing. I think the range and caliber of these remixes shows that.”
